Gas is cheap heat in Ohio, and a heat pump displacing a mid-life furnace often shows a long payback on fuel savings alone. A resistance convert sees the same warmth on a smaller bill immediately. The discipline that makes the arithmetic legible is a simple ledger: the last year of fuel receipts and electric bills next to the first year after conversion, read whole year against whole year each spring. The January electric bill in isolation will be the largest the house has ever produced and it is still the wrong number to judge by. The year is the number, and for oil, propane, and resistance conversions, the year wins.
